Paul Laurence Dunbar has three orchestras, the Prelude Strings, Concert Strings, and Symphonic Strings. In February, 2013, all three orchestras received a distinguished rating at KMEA Assessment. In addition, Rebecca Goff was invited to conduct the PLD Symphonic String Orchestra at the annual Kentucky Music Educators Association, the highest honor given to a performing school ensemble in Kentucky. This school year, more than 130 students are enrolled in the orchestras at PLD.
Rebecca Goff is beginning her 20th year of teaching and her 9th year as head director of orchestras at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School. She began her teaching career at the Alabama School of Fine Arts in Birmingham, Alabama where she worked in the elementary outreach program and provided orchestra for schools in a 100 mile radius and served as conductor of the Birmingham String Orchestra, similar to Lexington’s Preparatory Youth Orchestra. She then moved to Fayetteville, North Carolina where she taught at Westover Middle and High School. She later taught at Lilburn Middle School in Atlanta, GA but moved home to Lexington with her husband Patrick to be near family after the birth of her first child. She taught at Beaumont Middle School for several years, taking a group to perform for the Kentucky Music Educator’s convention before moving to the High School where she has also taken a group to KMEA. She has been asked to conduct all county honors orchestra twice in Louisville and once here in Lexington.
The most important things in Mrs. Goff’s life are her family, including her children Grace and Daniel, and her love of teaching! She has one dog, two cats, and a coffee addiction.
Anna Watts is a Dunbar alum and a recent graduate of the University of Kentucky, with a Bachelors Degree in Music Education. In high shcool she was a member of the All-State Orchestras all four years and was a member of Central Kentucky Youth Orchestra. This will be her fourth year as the assistant orchestra director at Dunbar and the orchestra teacher at Squires Elementary School and is the Director for the Friends in Music program through CKYO. She has taught private piano and violin lessons for almost 10 years.
The most important things in Mrs. Watts life are her wonderful husband, Nick, her family, her private students and her multitude of pets.
